Newsletters for Parents and Carers During Closure

Click the buttons below to read the newsletters. These contain helpful information for you during the school closure.

IXL

This is an internet-based programme for maths and literacy. You will receive an email from me later, and throughout the school closure period, outlining the areas to work on.

These tasks will also be marked with a gold star when the children log on to IXL so they know which tasks to complete.

Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 are already familiar with this website but for Years 1, 2 and 3 this will be new to them.

It is a very easy to use, and if children get a question wrong, it will show them where they went wrong before giving them a slightly easier question to work on.

The website address is https://uk.ixl.com/signin/wtwschool

Your child’s username and password was sent home but if they didn't not receive theirs please contact Nicola at nhall@wtwschool.co.uk

Homework for Nursery & Reception Class

Dear Early Years Parents and Carers,

The Early Years is an incredible time of a child’s life when all positive interactions with adults have a lasting impact on their development. While you are away from Walnut Tree Walk, we recommend you spend as much time as possible doing three things – playing with your child, speaking at length about topics and reading alongside them.

When playing with your child, you can open up whole new worlds.

You may already have fancy dress and if not you could make hats and costumes or build dens and new spaces for your child to use their imagination.

This website has links to lots of arts and crafts that could support your role play - http://www.kidsites.com/sites-fun/crafts.htm

When speaking to your child about different topics, using a mixture of descriptive comments and open ended questions/statements will enable more engaging discussion.

A good method is using 4 comments before asking an open question/statement.

Our topics at the moment are Fantasy Worlds (Superheroes, Pirates, Creatures, Kings and Queens) in Reception and People Who Help Us (Police, Doctors, Paramedics, Dentists) in Nursery.

For example, the conversation could begin, “That looks like a policeman. I have seen policemen and policewomen before. Sometimes they are walking and sometimes they travel in cars or on motorcycles.

They always wear uniforms. I wonder why they wear a uniform...”. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/ is a great resource for ideas and activities to support these topics.

When reading alongside your child, modelling excitement during stories will help them develop a love of reading.

All children love seeing their parents read and becoming immersed in the story.

You could put on different voices for the characters, and allow your children to repeat back what you have said in a silly voice. We will provide all children with some books to take home so that your children can practice their reading in the same way they have been this year. Reception children, and some older Nursery children, will enjoy using https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk.

Three useful, ad-free apps for children to use on the Ipad are:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/go-explore-from-cbeebies/id1444626898 -

Each activity in the Go Explore app is designed to help children as they grow, building up their skills and understanding. There are lots of enjoyable children's games to play.

These cover a range of topics, such as phonics with theAlphablocks, technology with Maddie’s Do You Know? and exploring differentgeographical habitats with the Go Jetters.

Your child can also have fun with shapes and sequences by planning a Hey Duggee party.

Help The Furchester Hotel guests make healthy choices, join Bing and friends to learn about emotions and lend a hand to the townsfolk of Biggleton.

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/meet-the-numberblocks/id1445555400

Designed to develop children’s early numeracy skills.

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/meet-the-alphablocks/id938119032

Designed to develop children’s early literacy skills.

Always follow the most recent government safety guidance but all trips outside and to new places of interest will be extremely valuable to your child as they develop their understanding of the world and work on their fine and gross motor skills.
