Year 3

Autumn Term - Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner : A study of the UK and London
The children will have the opportunity to study parts of UK and London. They will begin to use their map reading skills and learn to locate countries, cities, rivers and seas. They will also learn about London, past and present.

English
In Literacy the children will begin the term by responding to the class text ‘Charlotte’s Web by E.B White’ .
Children will do this through persuasive letter writing, character profiles and descriptive writing.
Maths
In Maths the children will revisit and extend their knowledge of place value and number operations.
They will also consolidate their understanding of addition and subtraction.
Science
In Science children will learn about different types of rocks, fossilisation and palaeontology.
They will use their investigative skills to research and record data.
Geography
In Geography children will use maps, atlases and globes to locate various places. They will research landmarks in and around the UK and explore geographical features of different regions.

History
In History children will learn about London past and present. This will involve learning about immigration, tourism and the Great Fire of London.
Art
In Art children will develop their drawing, printing and painting skills.

They will create pieces that represent landmarks in London and will get the opportunity to experiment with different materials.

DT
In DT children will learn how to create mechanical systems such as levers and leverages, in order to create moving pictures of London.
Spring Term - We will rock you: A study of the Stone Age and the Iron Age and Rome wasn’t built in a day

In the first half of the Spring term, the children will have the opportunity to learn about Britain through the ages.
In the second half of the Spring term, children will learn about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.
English
In English, the children will explore class texts including Stone Age Boy, Iron Man and Stig of the Dump.
They will use these texts as inspiration to produce diary entries, character and setting descriptions, as well as newspaper reports. The children will also read, perform and respond to a range of poetry using figurative language.
Maths
In Maths the children will expand their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction, mainly with three digit numbers.
They will also consolidate their understanding of doubling and halving and begin to understand fractions. In data handling, children will develop their graph reading skills by drawing and analysing bar charts, line graphs and pictograms.
They will also use place value to multiply and divide as well as practising quick recall of some multiplication facts. In measures, they will develop further their ability to read time on an analogue and digital clock face.
Science
At the beginning of the term the children will learn about Forces and Magnets. They will develop skills needed for scientific investigations including making predictions and written conclusions.
The children will investigate the strength of different magnets. In the second half of the Spring term, the science topic is Light.
The children will learn through practical investigation.
Geography
In Geography, children will discuss the importance of Skara Brae, examine evidence about Stonehenge, and understand why hillforts were built in the Iron Age.
History
In History, children will compare the past and the present day.
They will create chronological timelines and begin to understand the importance of archaeologists and their work.
Art
In Art, children will develop their drawing, printing and painting skills. They will create their own cave painting and create clay models of fossils.
Summer Term - Pure Imagination and Ready Steady Grow

In the first half of the summer term, the children will have the opportunity to learn about a range of artists and their works.
In the second half of the summer term, children will learn about plants and animals.
English
In English, the children will focus on stories about imaginary worlds and respond to their class text, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
They will use this as a starting point to develop their own story writing skills.
They also look at persuasive writing texts and attempt to use features of persuasive writing in letters, pamphlets and adverts.
Maths
In Maths, the children will revisit and extend their knowledge of place value and number operations.
They will also consolidate their understanding of partitioning and use of fractions. In data handling, children will revise measuring in millimetres, centimetres and metres, as well as consolidating bar charts.
They will also revisit telling the time to the nearest minute.
Science
In Science, children will identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants and explore the requirements of plants for life and growth.
They will investigate the way in which water is transported within plants and explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
History
In History children will research and learn about various artists’ lives such as Monet, Picasso etc, and how their art has influenced artists today.
Art
In Art children will focus on an artist they have studied and create works in their style.
